PLEASE NOTE: Due to technical and safety reasons linked to the heavy rains in September, a large portion of the Central Cemetery will be closed throughout October. Therefore the planned walk “Brno’s Ghost City” had to be postponed to another time and a replacement walk – by all means nonetheless interesting! – has been planned. Thank you for your understanding.

For centuries past, Brno had been home to Czech, German and Jewish population, plus many other newcomers. As nationalist tensions increased in the second half of the nineteenth century, two parallel worlds began to take shape in Brno, one for Czech-speakers and one for German-speakers.

Which schools you attended, which cultural centre you went to, which theatre you patronized, which sports clubs you were a member of, which church you worshipped in, which cafe you sipped your daily coffee in, which corso you strolled along – all this depended on which linguistic group you identified with.
In our walk, we will be looking at some of the notable buildings and sites of these parallel worlds, most still here, but others now only accessible through historical images.

Meeting point: Big Black ‘Clock’ at Náměstí Svobody
