Invite your family to the European Capital of Christmas

Brno’s city centre is always a treat to visit during the Christmas season. And this year, the organisers promise to make it even more special: Brno was pronounced the European Capital of Christmas 2024 (together with Waterford, Ireland).

The centre of Brno has now transformed into a magical winter wonderland, brimming with activities and events that celebrate traditional Czech Christmas. This is the perfect opportunity for your family & friends to get to know your new home!

Visit the website Brněnské Vánoce (in English), to see the full list of venues and the program. Here are just a few tips from the BEC team:

A Century of the Christmas Tree Tradition

One of Brno’s most cherished Christmas symbols is the Christmas Tree, a tradition that began in 1924. This year marks the tree’s 100th anniversary, a truly historic occasion. The tradition originates from the forests near Bílovice nad Svitavou and carries a poignant story. In 1919, writer Rudolf Těsnohlídek rescued an abandoned baby girl in these woods. Deeply moved, he proposed the idea of a public Christmas tree to support abandoned children, eventually leading to the establishment of a children’s home in 1929.

Christmas Markets and More

Until December 23, Brno’s Christmas markets, Brněnské Vánoce, will be lighting up the city. Svobody Square is hosting the largest market with the iconic Christmas tree, 62 stalls and the popular Winter Bar offering festive drinks like punch and the famous Turbomošt. Enjoy daily cultural performances, including live music, children’s theatre and local folklore.

For a quieter, family-friendly atmosphere, visit the market at Dominikánské Square, where you’ll find a handcrafted wooden nativity scene and activities for children. Foodies will love the Gourmet Christmas market at the courtyard of the Old Town Hall, where Brno’s top culinary spots present unique holiday treats.

Advent Traditions Across Brno

Brno’s festive offerings go far beyond markets. Explore these unique attractions during the Christmas season:

  • Ice Skating at Moravské Square: Enjoy skating on the city’s largest ice rink, surrounded by the charm of a newly renovated park.
  • Labyrinth Under Zelný trh: Dive into Brno’s history by touring the medieval cellars beneath the marketplace.
  • Wooden Nativity Scene: Marvel at the life-sized nativity scene on Dominikánské náměstí, a favourite for children and photographers alike.
  • Festive Šalina Rides: Hop on the iconic “Christmas Tram” for a cosy ride through the illuminated city streets.
  • Špilberk Castle Light Park: Visit the castle for an enchanting display of lights and immerse yourself in the magic of Brno’s history (for a fee)

Giving Back During the Holidays

Christmas in Brno is also a time for generosity. Under the Svobody Square tree, the Czech Red Cross donation box continues the tradition of helping those in need. Additionally, the “Donate Your Cup” initiative allows you to transform the deposit from reusable cups into donations for charitable causes.

A European Christmas Capital

Adding to its festive charm, Brno proudly shares the title of European Capital of Christmas with Waterford, Ireland. This collaboration celebrates the city’s vibrant holiday traditions and its ability to bring people together through culture and celebration. On December 15, an online event will connect Brno and Waterford, highlighting the unity and warmth of the season.
