2) NATURE SWIMMING AREAS
There are many various lakes in South Moravia. If you’re tired of crowded swimming pools, prefer some greenery and don’t mind swimming in a natural lake which is not crystal clear but still clean, there are places to choose from. The Regional Public Health Authority monitors the quality of water regularly, so you can check it online to see which places are ok for swimming.
Here are some of the places located within approximately 30 mins drive from Brno.
EAST:
Mariánské údolí
A romantic valley in Brno-Líšeň district with several water reservoirs. First one is near more than 300-year-old Kadlecův mlýn (Kadlec Mill); the second is located below a prehistoric settlement Staré zámky and the third near Muchova bouda (Mucha Cottage). There is a small pub next to the grassy beach, together with mobile toilets and changing rooms. Accessible for bicyclists and skaters, too.
A traditional „first republic“ swimming place, with modernised facilities, children’s pool, refreshments, restaurant.
Small, recently built natural lake, with a small pool for children, grass and trees around; facilities and refreshments.
SOUTH:
Mušov / Nové Mlýny lakes – Pasohlávky, Strachotín, Pavlov, Milovice
Three large lakes created in the 1980s. Various places and campsites with a beautiful view of the Pálava ridge and vineyards. Merkur Camp in Pasohlávky with a separate small lake and a water lift for wakeboarding and water skiing.
NORTH:
Smaller, recently renovated pleasant lake; accessible by car or train; grass and trees, no facilities nearby.
Not to be confused with the Mušov lakes near Pálava hills. Accessible by bus or car; reservoir with facilities, children’s pool, playground, minigolf; grass and beach areas, trees; refreshments and restaurant, parking.
…and for those who like a bit of adrenalin…
A spectacular stony lake with very clean and cold water, also used for diving; with a view of passing trains; access by train, bus or car; no facilities.
3) BRNO LAKE
After almost two decades of unpleasant green algae and three years of serious and intense cleaning efforts, the „Sea of Brno“ has come back to its former glory. It offers a broad range of relaxing options at the end of a tiring summer working day or during the weekend. Only a tram or boat ride away, you can choose from busy beaches with entertainment, facilities and bars, or quiet grassy meadows and shaded tree groves away from it all. So – what is there:
SWIMMING
LEFT SIDE
Rakovec – nearest to the tram, busy grassy areas, playgrounds, minigolf shallow entry, facilities. Suitable for children.
Kozí Horka – similar to Rakovec, parking, facilities, shallow entry. Water bicycle and boat rental.
Rokle – calm, grassy areas, shallow entry; further away from tram – better by boat or car, pub.
RIGHT SIDE
Sokolské koupaliště – by boat, car, bike or on foot; grassy areas with trees, shallow entry; beach volleyball, pubs, facilities.
Osada – by boat, car or on foot; calm grassy areas, trees, steep entry; naturist area; pubs nearby.
Mečkov – by boat or bicycle; calm area, rocks.
The „parník“, meaning „steamboat“ is actually no steamboat at all – they have always been electric, battery-operated, thus quite environmentally friendly for the lake. They run from Bystrc harbour („Přístaviště“) to Veveří Castle and some even beyond, to Veverská Bítýška (depending on water level). The interval is 45 minutes. You can buy tickets right in the harbour in the newly revamped ticket office. There also are some special deals – a 2-in-1 ticket serving for a boat ride and entrance into Veveří Castle and another one to enter the ZOO.
Water bicycles for two or family-sized as well as small boats are available at Kozí Horka.
