- What to do in case of emergency?
Day or night, in case of serious emergencies (that may be life-threatening) you should call 112 (European emergency number, the operators speak English). An ambulance will be sent with medical support; you will be examined on the spot, treated or, if necessary, taken to the hospital.
If you are having an injury or illness that is too serious to be dealt with by your general practitioner the next morning but not serious enough to call for an ambulance, you require what Czechs define as “urgent care”. In such situations, if you cannot go to your registered GP, the place to go to is the Trauma Hospital of Brno (“Úrazová nemocnice”, Ponávka 6, tel. 545 538 111), located near the centre of the city. The Trauma Hospital has urgent care facilities for both medical and dental problems.
During normal working hours (weekdays from 7:00 to 17:00), you should first go to your GP if you require urgent care. At other times – Monday to Friday 17:00 to 7:00 and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at all times, you should make your own way to the hospital.
- My child is injured/sick. Where should I go?
In the case of children and young people (up to the age of 18) that are in need of urgent care, you should turn to the Children’s Hospital at Černopolní 9. Urgent care services are available from 15:30 to 7:00 on weekdays and round the clock on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
- Do I have to pay for medical services?
Visits to your doctor are covered by your insurance policy. If you need to visit a specialist, your GP will arrange for this (you first need to see your GP to get ‘an invitation’ to see a specialist); the financial arrangements are the same as in the case of treatment by your GP.
If you are insured with an insurance company (international one) which does not have an office in the Czech Republic, then you have to pay the doctor in cash, s/he will give you a bill and your insurance company will give you the money back based on the bills. This procedure is not common in the Czech Republic and most doctors are not used to it. However, you will be most likely be successful if you go to a private doctor. They should be used to it, or at least they are able to provide you with a bill for the service.
Learn more in the guide Health Insurance.
Additionally, there are some small fees that you are required to pay no matter your insurance: such as the charge (90 CZK) for emergency health care.
- Do I have to pay for dental care?
Your health insurance will cover dental check-ups twice a year and routine measures (e.g. amalgam dental fillings, an x-ray once every two years).
For matters such as using non-standard materials for fillings (understand for example white fillings), having a tooth capped, and so on, you (like Czechs) will have to pay a surcharge.
- Am I free to choose a doctor?
You are free to choose your general practitioner, though you should check to make sure that s/he has signed a contract with the insurance company with which you have taken out health insurance. If this is not the case, your insurance provider will still reimburse the doctor, but only when it is a case of “essential” or “urgent” treatment.
You may also contact your health insurance company and request a list of doctors in your area.
The same applies to specialists.

- Are there any pharmacies open 24/7?
In Brno we have only a few pharmacies which are open non-stop (24/7):
- Lékárna Koliště at Koliště 47 (tel. 545 424 811)
- Max – nearby the main train station – Bašty 413/2 (tel. 542 213 531)
- What is the cumpolsary vaccination for my child?
If you come to the Czech Republic for a period longer than 3 months with your child, you are obliged to follow the Czech law regarding the vaccination of children.
Czech law states that every child has to be vaccinated for the following diseases:
- Diphtheria
- Tetanus
- Whooping cough
- Haemophilus influenzae B
- Viral hepatitis B
- Polio
- Measles
- Rubella
All the vaccinations are for free, the state pays for them. You have to pay for the process, the injection, which is approximately 300 CZK. If you have Czech health insurance, injections are for free as well.
The doctor who will take care of your baby has to follow the law of the Czech Republic as well as the law of your home country regarding vaccinations – meaning if your country has another compulsory vaccination, then the Czech doctor will apply it to your child but you will have to pay for the vaccination.

General info
Available medical care and a clear understanding of the health care system in a new country are among the key necessities when settling down abroad. The overall level of medical services in the Czech Republic is high.f
Should you struggle with understanding the Czech medical system, it is thoroughly explained at Healthcare User Guide (in English, 30 pages) put together by the St. Anna Hospital in Brno.
The way you can make use of these services depends on the type of health insurance you have (public or commercial) and the particular health insurance company the service has a contract with.
(For more information see the guide Health insurance)
Finding a doctor
1) First of all, contact your insurance company and ask for assistance with finding a doctor. The insurance company is obliged to find a general doctor, pediatrician, dentist etc. who has an agreement with your insurance company. Your insurance company must help you find a doctor. Read more here!
At VZP, the biggest health insurance company in the Czech Republic, after you ask for their help, they provide you with a link to the list of contractual doctors who have free capacity at the moment. Contact the doctors, call or email, explain your issue, and ask them to register you as a regular patient. However, if they do not register you, VZP offers a “safety net”. If a doctor from the list tells you that they cannot register you, you are supposed to ask for their written reasoning for such decision (Písemné vyjádření, že přijetí do trvalé péče u PZS nemohlo být provedeno a z jakého důvodu in Czech) which you are then obliged to forward to the insurance company. Demand this reasoning from the doctor who did not register you. If no doctor from the list answers your calls or emails, inform the insurance company about it too.
If you cannot be in the public health insurance system, contact your commercial insurance for foreigners provider – they all have assistance service. If you are chosing a commercial insurance for foreigners, here are your options.
2) The complete list of doctors and medical facilities in Brno (in Czech) is available at the National Registry of Medical Service Providers , including a map of all doctors and specialists (in Czech). You can find a map of doctors and facilities. Click on “mapa poskytovatelů” and select your region (Jihomoravský kraj) and city (Brno-město, Brno). And then choose the type of doctor you are looking for, for a general practitioner, select “všeobecné praktické lékařství“, for a dentist – “zubní lékařství” etc. However, first check with the doctor if they accept your health insurance company and if they are available or speak your language.
There is also a list of medical facilities in Brno, at the Brno city homepage. Download a document called Informační průvodce. (in Czech, 200-pages-long booklet from the year 2023-2024, the newest available). Also, if you are in a hurry and searching for medical facilities in the city, this shortlist (in Czech) can come in handy.
3) Use an independent service, a search engine and the popular database Známý lékař (in Czech only). It also contains contact to various GPs, including ratings and comments from patients.
4) Try to contact doctors from our Brno Expat Centre list of doctors, below, or the list of Centre for International Cooperation, Masaryk University is available on their official website.
5) In case of urgent medical need: Should you immediately need services of a GP without being registered at any (you are feeling sick, you need pills and a sick note), you can go to the Trauma Hospital (Address: Ponávka 6) and ask for a GP’s check-up there. They are available 24/7, except between 3 and 5 PM. However, you will need to be ready to wait maybe for hours before they admit you.
You can also visit an urgent medical care at the Military Hospital (Address: Zábrdovická 3). However, their emergency service is only available between 3.30PM and 8.30PM on weekdays and from 8AM to 2PM on weekends and bank holidays. Also, they do not guarantee communication in English, so we highly recommend to got here with an interpreter.
For a fast ambulance and immediate admission to the hospital (in serious cases only), call 112.
Commercial options and paid service
If you want to make the process of searching for a GP easier for yourself and you don’t mind paying for it, you can contact the Canadian Medical clinic and prepay the membership for English speaking service, in house doctors, help line etc. The membership fee is for the English friendly reception, the actual medical care is then covered from your health insurance.
Telemedicine
When in need of medical consultation, before searching for a doctor, you may take advantage of online doctors, who can answer your questions, suggest medication, and recommend a specialist.
- www.ulekare.cz (in English) is a website and an app for consulting a doctor and for making an appointment with a doctor. Consulting is available for single payment, however, the doc appointment only as part of employee benefit membership (talk to your employer ;). Clients of OZP insurance company can use the service as a benefit.
- www.meddi.com/cz/en is an app (in English) for consulting a doctor via call, chat or video call. Medicine prescription, and appointment with GP or paediatrician is possible for an extra fee.
At the doctors
There are indeed many doctors who speak English (but you have to be patient with them, not all of them speak fluently). Nevertheless, the nurses often do not speak English. When you go to visit a doctor or a hospital, the nurse is the first person you have to speak with. For this reason, here is a short list of phrases which can be helpful.
I’d like to see a doctor | Chtěl bych vidět doktora. |
Do you have an appointment? | Jste objednaný? |
Is it urgent? | Je to naléhavé? |
I’d like to make an appointment to see Dr… | Rád bych se objednal k doktorovi… |
Do you have any doctors who speak English? | Máte doktora, který mluví anglicky? |
Do you have private medical insurance? | Máte soukromé zdravotní pojištění? |
Have you got a European Health Insurance Card? | Máte Evropský průkaz zdravotního pojištění? |
Card? | Pojištění? |
Please take a seat. | Prosím, posaďte se. |
The doctor’s ready to see you now. | Lékař vás nyní prohlédne. |
The BEC list of doctors*:
*Please note, this is a collection of doctors and facilities recommended by our clients and other foreigners. We do not guarantee the availability of the doctor, language capacities, or quality of the medical care.
IMPORTANT: Please, bear in mind that many doctors in the city (as well as the whole republic) currently work on the limit of their capacity and do not accept new patients. Give it a try anyway but if everything fails, please, contact your insurance agency and ask there, they are legally bound to provide you with a doctor.
This is a list of English-speaking doctors that we know of. However, please, bear in mind that this list does not mean that they are currently available. Please, try contacting them on your own.
