Join us for another one of Don Sparling’s famous walks, all new and original. With his 50+ years of Brno knowledge, he’ll guide you through the city’s history and in his very special way help you understand what makes it what it is.

One of Brno’s current mottos is “Brno – City of Universities”.  In fact these are relatively late arrivals, but for centuries the city has indeed been a centre of learning – in churches and monasteries, schools both public and private, musical institutions, artists’ studios, learned societies, businesses, clubs and a host of other venues.

On this walk, we’ll look at the theme of “learning” in the city over the past 800 years or so, and how this has marked today’s Brno. Where did the local well-off Czech citizens send their daughters to be proper housewives at the end of the 19th century? Who opened the first art school in what’s now the Czech Republic? What two Roman Catholic priests who studied in Brno were later declared saints and martyrs? Just why did Janáček end up in Brno at the age of eleven?  Why should Brno be a Mecca for beer lovers?

This spring’s walk will provide answers to these and many more burning questions.

Meeting place: Petrov (Biskupská or Petrov street), by the statues of Cyril and Methodius and the street leading to the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul
