Communicate with offices online - through a 'data mailbox'

There are alternatives to visiting public offices in person – or mailing them documents through the post office. You can easily avoid long queues and a conversation in Czech.

Save yourself some time and preserve your nerves by communicating with offices online – through an online tool called Data Mailbox.

Data Mailbox (or datová schránka) replaces the traditional way of sending and receiving documents in paper form and serves as a verified tool. It’s a system of secure communication, available for free in its basic form, and easy to set up during one visit to the nearest CzechPoint.

Important notes

Once you have the Mailbox, all offices will send their correspondence electronically here. Make sure you set up a notification (by a text, or an email), as a document delivered to a Data Mailbox is considered as received and read 10 days after being sent (i.e. you can’t claim that you haven’t read it).

Also, you are obliged to use the Mailbox towards all public institutions, i.e. you cannot send regular post anymore once you have the Mailbox.

The original online platform is in Czech only (use Google translater, then), but you can download an app Datovka, which has an English version.

Even with these conditions in mind, it can still be a very useful tool. Consider if it’s right for you.
