Travel through Europe with Czech residence permit
Brno is delightfully centred in the very heart of Europe. Take advantage, take your Czech residence card and go exploring across borders in any direction!
Travelling with a long-term visa or a Long-term residence
This type of permit automatically translates into a tourist visa across the Schengen states. This means you can spend up to 90 days traveling through these countries in the span of 180 days.
(The Schengen States are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.)
When travelling to EU countries outside of the Schengen Zone (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania), we recommend checking their specific entry conditions, for example at their embassy’s webpage.
Outside of EU or Schengen states, your Czech residence permit is not an applicable travel document, and your right to enter would be judged upon your passport and appropriate visa.
Traveling as a family member of an EU citizen
Even your temporary residence permit automatically translates into a tourist visa across the Schengen states. This means you can spend up to 90 days traveling through these countries in the span of 180 days. You don’t need to travel together with your EU-citizen family member.
(The Schengen States are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.)
When travelling to EU countries outside of the Schengen Zone (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania), we recommend checking their specific entry conditions, for example at their embassy. It may happen that in some EU countries outside of Schengen, a family member of an EU citizen can only travel accompanied by this family member.
What to do when your residence permit is still being processed?
Get a bridging label from the Immigration office. You have to provide proof that you will be travelling (for example your flight tickets).
Health Insurance
Holders of the green public health insurance card (as in this picture) must buy commercial travel insurance. Holders of the blue EHIC public insurance card (picture) aren’t obliged to pay for extra travel insurance, however it is recommended to do so – especially if you want to dive, go on holiday mountains, parachuting. Czechs usually buy this travel insurance when travelling across borders.
