Move to Brno as a Digital Nomad

For EU citizens, moving to the Czech Republic as digital nomads has always been easy. The country opens the possibility to digital nomads from other countries, too. Namely: to the citizens of the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korean Republic, Singapore, Taiwan, and newly, also Brazil, Mexico and Israel.

Btw, your family can relocate with you.

To get a long-term visa as a digital nomad, you need to fit some specific requirements.

Who is a digital nomad according to Czech law?

Either a freelancer in the IT or marketing field, or an employee of a foreign company or public institution who can work remotely for a long-term period from the Czech Republic, using telecommunication means.

You also need to be a citizen of one of the countries mentioned above.

There are more requirements to check – read further.

Can I take my family?

A digital nomad’s long-term visa allows family members to relocate with you. In this case, close family members mean: a spouse, registered partner, or children under 18 years of age.

What are the criteria for the digital nomad visa?

1] You are moving to the Czech Republic, not extending your stay here.

In other words, you can apply for a digital nomad visa only if you don’t have (or recently didn’t have) any long-term visa or long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic. So, a digital nomad visa is not a solution if you don’t manage to extend your current visa or if you’re afraid that your visa will be revoked. This visa is limited to newcomers to the Czech Republic, it’s not possible to change the residence status of foreigners who are already residing within.

2] You have higher education (at least 3 years) in IT, marketing, or advertising. Or, proof of experience in these fields of a minimum of 3 years.

3] The next criteria differ:

For employees:

  • a salary that amounts to at least 1.5 of the Czech average gross annual salary (announced yearly by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. Until April 2025, that would mean your salary would need to be equal to or higher than 65 012 CZK a month)
  • Your employer is a company that employs at least 50 employees worldwide, or a public institution or university.

For freelancers:

  • you need to have a Czech trade license (for more information about that, read our guides Becoming self-employed, and Being self-employed)
  • A promise to conclude a contract for the provision of services, or an affidavit from a client showing
    • the duration of the contract (=for how long you need the visa)
    • and remuneration in the amount of at least 1.5 the average gross annual salary announced by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The total remuneration is spread over the individual months of the duration of the contract.
